Alright so it really depends for which school you are going to but on average most schools require about 20 images for a portfolio. About half or 10 should be observational drawing, this can include still life images, figure drawing, scenes outside, ect ect. JUST THAT YOU ARE DRAWING FRO REAL LIFE AND NOT A PICTURE. The rest is whatever else you draw.

I started to prepare my portfolio when i did pre-college at CCA. There I did several figure drawing and life drawing studies so I had all of that covered. I however also included sketch book pages of places i did while waiting for the bus or w/e

For the rest of my artwork since I'm going into illustration I provided examples of things that use more conceptual work rather than realistically based- also all projects were things that would be done in the illustration world such as a mock album cover, a scene as if from a comic book, a movie poster, a t-shirt design, a drawing based off a poem, a drawing based off a greek myth, a published drawing for my high school, and a published two page magazine spread.

The best is to provide a variety of work that shows your talent and to be confident with each piece on its own. If one work you're not very proud of but it fits the requirements of the portfolio it's quite obvious that it is the weakest piece out of 20 so be sure you like all the work you are sending off.

For me I got the advice of possibly making a linking theme between my work, but this again was only one school that gave me this advice.
